Farida Fahmy - Principle Dancer, Original Reda Troupe

Renowned Egyptian Dance icon, Farida Fahmy is the Original Reda Troupe Principle dancer of 25 years, and co-founder of the Reda Troupe. She dedicated her life to Egyptian dance for theatre and cinema, traveling and touring internationally for most of her life. This year, farida celebrates 50 year Golden Jubillee - her anniversary commemorating her years in dance and since the foundation of the Reda Troupe.

Farida Fahmy was the daughter of a British mother and Egyptian father - Dr. Hassan Fahmy, a noted university professor of engineering. In 1959, when her brother-in-law Mahmoud Reda decided to create a dance company featuring folkloric dances of Egypt, she became the principal female dancer. Together, Reda, Fahmy, and the rest of Reda Troupe created a new performing art - a theatrical presentation of traditional Egyptian folk culture.

The Reda Troupe became world famous with many followers, performing in over 50 countries, for many international Folk Festivals and performances for heads of states both in Egypt and abroad. In 1965, King Hussein of Jordan awarded Farida Fahmy the Star of Jordan. In 1967, Egypt's President Nasser awarded her the Order of Arts and Science. She received the Order of Tunisia in 1973. Pursuing further dance studies, Farida gained her Master's Degree in Dance Ethnology from UCLA in 1986.

Farida succeeded in becoming a symbol of grace and truthful expressions of the spirit of Egyptian dancing. She gave her whole being to dancing as a dedication and a vocation to which she devoted endless hours of training. Her unmistakable talent has gained her worldwide popularity. As a dancer & choreographer, Farida Fahmy played a major role in elevating dance into a fine art in Egypt.

For the Sphinx Festival, for the first time, Farida presents two original in depth seminars exploring the Essence of Egyptian dance music and movement, plus a fascinating "journey" of various provincial stylisations from around Egypt. For dancers and musicians interested in Egyptian arts, this is a rare event from one of the world's true leading Egyptian dance professionals and international scholars.
